Puppies require a gentle introduction to grooming to help set them up for success in their adult life. Below will list some things you can do to help get your puppy ready for grooming:
- Rub their toes, feet and nails whilst offering treats and praise. This helps simulate hair cutting and nail trimming
- Run a spoon across their head and around their muzzle whilst offering treats. This simulates scissors and helps get them used to objects being up close
- Introducing a soft brush that won’t snag their fur but help keep on top of their coat and prepare them for grooming brushes
- Practice chin holds. Gently hold their chin fluff and give them treats when they stay still. Even better if you can teach them to lay on the palm of your hand whilst brushing their hair
- Use a hairdryer in the same room as them to help get them accustomed to the sound and then gently work up to using it on them with treats
- Use the base of an electric toothbrush and run it across their back and body to help simulate the sound and feel of clippers
- Schedule puppy intro’s once they’ve had their second round of jabs and get them used to being away from home and in a salon environment
